  • Title:  Ein Gedi Synagogue 001
  • Description:  The old synagogue was built in the 2nd century CE but its beautiful large mosaic floor was well preserved, from the late Roman and Byzantine Eras.

The decorations are based on geometric forms brilliantly weaved together to create a central 8-pointed star.

It is believed that the source of their wealth was the cultivation of the Balsam, a plant used to prepare the most expensive fragrance in the ancient world, as the Dead Sea valley was the only place suitable for the growth of this plant.

The inscription on the mosaic floor at the synagogue warns the Jews not to reveal the town secret (assumed to be the method of preparing the balsam).
